Cave of Truth This was the site of an ancient Jedi testing ground, part of the Teyan Praxeum located on Teya IV. Within the Cave, potential Jedi faced their most dangerous foe in a struggle between the Light and Dark Sides of the Force. Those Jedi padawans who triumphed over their foes emerged as full-fledged Jedi Knights. Chamber of Antiquities Located two levels below the main floor of the ancient Great Library of the Jedi, on the planet Ossus, this facility preserved paper documents from the earliest days of the Jedi Knights. Also protected within the walls of the Chamber was a wealth of Sith artifacts, including at least one Sith holocron. Cularin System This Mid-Rim solar system was located in the Expansion Region, close to the Corellian Trade Route. The system was located some 200 years before the Battle of Naboo by Reidi Artom, who named it Reidi Artom VI before learning that the system had been already catalogued. It was unique and unusual in many ways. First, its primary star was actually a pair of stars that existed in extremely close proximity, the yellow Morasil and the white dwarf Termandus. Second, three of the system's five planets were incredibly dense, giving the entire system an incredibly large gravitational pull and causing all sorts of problems for starship navigational computers. Third, the system was also a nexus for the energies of the Force, both the Light Side and the Dark. Navigation in and around the system is made even more dangerous by the existence of a dense cloud of comets, whose positions change regularly and cannot be adequately predicted. The asteroid belt which located between the planet of Genarius and Almas was believed to be the remnants of a lush, jungle planet. Data revealed that the asteroid belt passed completely around the twin suns of Morasil and Termadus once every 3,924 standard days. Shortly after the Battle of Naboo, the entire Cularin System suddenly disappeared from the sector. No one knows exactly what happened, not even the inhabitants of the system's planets. What was known was that the Cularin System reappeared several years later, almost as suddenly as it disappeared, shortly after the onset of the Clone Wars. Many linked the disappearance, known as The Blink, to the rediscovery of the ancient artifact known as the Darkstaff. Dacho District This was one of the largest factory districts found on the planet Coruscant, some 700 years before the Battle of Geonosis. At that time, a chemical explosion in the Dacho district set off the planet's most lethal industrial accident. The explosion occurred deep below the surface of the planet, and unleashed toxic neuritic carbide gases, killing more than 300,000 beings who were trapped in the complex. Investigation by the Old Republic revealed more than the reason behind the explosion. Urban legend claimed that the sub-levels of the factories were processing the bodies of poor and disadvantaged immigrants in order to reduce them to their biological fluids. Although the actual cause of the explosion was classified by the Republic, every Dacho district corporate executive fled the planet, and the entire area was abandoned. During the last decades of the Old Republic, the Dacho district was rumored to be haunted, and the Jedi Knights recognized a subtly nightmarish emanation of the Force from the area. It became known as the Dead Sector, and was avoided at all costs. Perhaps these were the reasons that Darth Sidious and his apprentice, Darth Tyranus, chose to meet there in the wake of the Battle of Geonosis. Dantooine Crystal Cave This was the name of the cave, located on the planet Dantooine many millennia before the Galactic Civil War, that was kept secret by the Jedi Knights of the time. The Cave was located at the southeast end of the Sandral Fields. In this cave, they harvested the basic crystals that were used in the construciton of lightsabers. When the Jedi temple on Dantooine was abandoned, the location of the Crystal Cave was lost. It was also found out that this cave had a special crystal formation in it which would sense a Force user when they came near it and then, if left for a few years, it would produce a crystal which was bound to that Force user. If used in the Force users Lightsaber, then it produced an extremely powerful blade. These crystals will glow moderately in the presence of the Force user they are bound to. Dark Side Cave (Click For Picture) On the planet Dagobah, a dark side site of great power and significance hides deep within an endless swamp. The site is a cave that stretches beneath the roots of a massive gnarltree. Legends associated the creation ofthis dark side site with the Dark Jedi of Bpfassh who once terrorized the systems of the Sluis sector. Regardless of its origin, the cave pulsed with the power of the dark side of the Force. Master Yoda used this cave as a test for Luke Skywalker during the young man's Jedi training. Just the sight of the place made Luke tremble. "There's something not right here," Luke tells Yoda. "I feel cold, death." Yoda agrees. "That place...is strong with the dark side of the Force," he explains to his student. "A domain of evil it is. In it you must go." When Luke asks what is in the cave, Yoda answers, "Only what you take with you." The dangers of the dark side cave on Dagobah arent physical in nature. Instead, the cave plays on the fears and desires of those who come within the range of its influence, seeking to tempt or frighten them with strange visions and dire predictions. The interior of the cave is wet and slimy. It is dark and quiet. Here, amid the dangling roots and deep shadows, the dark side generates illusions to play upon the doubts and fears of those who enter the cave. Dark Side Nexus Any point in the spatial continuum that contains a great deal of Dark Side energy. These places were often guarded by Jedi Knights, so that the energies did not seduce passersby. Such a nexus was located on Dagobah, and Yoda forced Luke Skywalker into it, to confront his heritage. Dxun, The Demon Moon It orbits the world of Onderon, giving rise to the most terrible legends-and even more terrible truths. The moon Dxun, called the demon moon, houses all kinds of monstrous creatures. A dense jungle covers the moon, but the place is far from pleasant. It rains almost constantly throughout the endless jungle, and a thick, seminoxious fog clings to the horizon like the obscuring webs of some giant spider. Frequent quakes rock the demon moon, and volcanoes regularly spew molten lava and clouds of hot gas. This environment, combined with pockets of dark side power, has created some of the toughest, most brutal life forms in the galaxy. Even the plants developed potent natural defenses in order to survive. Some became poisonous. Others grew wicked barbs. Many became carnivorous, hunting and killing prey as efficiently as predators from the animal kingdom. In the ancient past, a planetoid entered Onderon's orbit and increased the number of the world's moons to four. The new celestial body altered the orbital paths of all the moons. Dxun's new path allowed its atmosphere to brush against Onderon's for a few weeks during the planet's summer season. Over the millennia, this periodic meeting has had two notable effects. First, the atmosphere of Onderon has become slightly noxious, while Dxun's atmosphere has become slightly more tolerable. Second, Dxun's largest flying predators have been able to migrate from the moon to the planet during these periods to find more plentiful food on Onderon. As civilization developed on Onderon, the humans gathered in one huge walled city to defend themselves against the predators from the demon moon. It was in this city, called Iziz, that the darksider Freedon Nadd would eventually rise to power. While the demon moon was hellish and its inhabitants were savage, the place was not inherently evil. Not originally. When Jedi Master Area Jeth decided to inter the remains of the evil Sith Lord Freedon Nadd and his descendants, King Ommin and Queen Amanoa, on the demon moon, things changed. Of course, the plan was that the natural dangers inherent in the ecology would serve as a natural defense for the Sith tomb. Nadd's tomb was built from Mandalorian iron, a nearly indestructible alloy that repels lightsaber energy. This not only prevented interlopers from invading Nadd's resting place (and stealing the Sith artifacts also interred there), but protected the tomb from the massive tidal shifts that racked Dxun. Area did not foresee the consequences of his actions, however. The evil residue of Nadd's dead body (as well as the dark side auras of numerous Sith artifacts) began to twist and alter the very life of Dxun itself. The orbalisk, a deadly, predatory parasite, became capable of feeding on dark side energy. Plants that grew around the tomb changed, becoming even more deadly. Many different types of predators inhabited the area surrounding the tomb, changing into creatures of the darkness. Seekers of dark knowledge-including Exar Kun, instigator of the Sith War, and Darth Bane, savior of the Sith-faced such monsters as they fought to enter the wellspring of Sith knowledge contained in the Mandalorian iron vault. By the time of Darth Bane, the entire demon moon became a dark side site. The dense jungle is considered to be a minor dark side site. There are also a few major sites scattered throughout the jungle and at least two major sites: Freedon Nadd's tomb and the well of darkness. The iron tomb that houses the remains of three powerful darksiders has contained a wealth of Sith artifacts over the centuries, and some of those items probably remain locked away well into The New Jedi Order era. This extreme site radiates with the presence of a dark side master and his descendants. Although Exar Kun destroyed Freedon Nadd's spirit, the dark lord's presence can still be felt, even if he can no longer manifest and influence the actions of any visitors who may come to pay their respects-or loot his final resting place. The well of darkness is a great pit located within a cave filled with orbalisks. For some reason that may never be known, the dark side power that seeped out of Freedon Nadd's tomb seems to have pooled in the fissure that looks like an open wound in Dxun's rocky flesh. Those who enter the cave claim to hear the whispered voices of long-dead Sith Lords calling to them from deep within the well. Too soft and indistinct to hear clearly, the voices nevertheless fill visitors with fear and dark images of unnameable horrors. It is believed that if a visitor can overcome his fear and absorb the horrors projected at him, he can learn dark side secrets lost to the depths of time. Of course, those who fail to embrace the specters of the well are often lost to madness. From Exar Kun to Darth Bane, Dxun has been a sort of pilgrimage for those attempting to master the dark side of the Force. Dark side secrets and Sith artifacts-or at least the promise of such-have drawn would-be darksiders from across the galaxy. Few were able to survive in the harsh environment, and most of those who made it to one of the dark side sites found only death or madness waiting for them. You can use Dxun as a testing ground for a dark sider, especially one with a master. A dark sider exploring the dark side on his own might want to travel to the demon moon to uncover a secret or two to help him gain power and prestige. The lure of Sith artifacts will probably be too great for a dark side hopeful to resist. Freedon Nadd's tomb is not without guardians, however, and if a dark sider survives the various dangers of the demon moon, he'll still have to contend with tomb beasts and other horrors. It would be extremely difficult for a dark sider to break into the tomb and survive a visit to its dark interior. Of course, success should grant the dark sider an artifact or two, such as a Sith amulet or a Sith holocron. The well of darkness presents an entirely different challenge-and an extremely tempting reward. The cave surrounding the well houses a huge colony of orbalisks, which present a challenge in and of itself. In addition, the well spins three separate illusions to test the intruder. Each illusion is more potent, more horrific than the previous one. The illusions threaten to shatter the mind of the recipient while promising great power. Barely perceptible voices rise out of the well, caressing the intruder with the cold touch of the dark side and filling his mind with images of evil. The first illusion tests the resolve of the dark sider, trying to determine whether the intruder is worthy of the dark side. A vision of terrible violence and evil, delivered upon someone or something the intruder holds dear, seems incredibly real and frightening. The cave fades away and the dark sider suddenly finds himself in a place he knows well, watching the terrible drama unfold but unable to participate in any way. If the dark sider succeeds, the dark sider is drawn more into the dark side, resists giving in to the madness-inducing illusion, and can proceed onto the next test. If the dark sider fails, they suffers a bout of madness, although their sanity will slowly return over the course of days. The second illusion draws the dark sider deeper into the darkness, this time playing upon the dark sider's dreams and hidden desires. The dark side sees himself as the focus of this illusion, the recipient of everything he always wanted-power, influence, wealth, prestige, love. Only one thing stands in the dark sider's way, either a cherished friend, respected mentor, or loved one. To reach the dream, the dark sider must destroy the thing in his path. The final illusion deals with anger and aggression. The dark sider is worked into a rage by images that he just hates with every fiber of his being. This uncontrolled anger opens the dark sider to the full force of the dark side. Great Library of the Jedi (Click For Picture) The Jedi Library of Ossus was a revered center of knowledge for a thousand years before its destruction by the Cron supernova. The library's construction was initiated by Odan-Urr shortly after he helped Empress Teta unify the planet Kirrek to her system, and it quickly became a repository for knowledge of all sorts and a training facility for Jedi Knights from across the Republic. The expansive library contains four above-ground levels, all with soaring ceilings and utilitarian, thick-walled stone architecture. Within are the reading and instruction rooms (Level 1), the data card and reader tape stacks (Level 2), and the Archives that occupy Levels 3 and 4. Four primary towers jut from Level 4, containing materials that are stored based on the dating catalogue devised by Master Odan-Urr: Pre-Hyperdrive, Pre-Republic, Early-Republic, and Mature Republic, although the Jedi of Master Skywalker's time have had to adapt their investigations to a more up-to-date classification. Three sublevels house oft-discussed but seldom-viewed treasures of the library. The Chamber of Antiquities, especially, contains material that would thrill any Jedi academic, but much of it is Sith and dark side lore, to which access is restricted. A researcher seeking to learn of the dark side must have permission of both the Jedi Council and Master Odan-Urr himself. During the Sith War, Exar Kun comes to Ossus to recruit other Jedi to the dark side. While there, he slays Master Odan-Urr and steals a Sith holocron from the Chamber of Antiquities. Later, cronies of Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma cause the Cron Cluster to go nova. While the Jedi work to rescue as much of Ossus as they can, a special group of Jedi work to save the contents of the library. They are able to salvage only a fraction before the supernova consumes Ossus and its grand library, but what is saved is transferred to the Exis Station on nearby Teedio, where a temporary library is assembled. Over the centuries, much of the material is eventually transferred to the Jedi Archives on Coruscant as (ironically) the Teedio star begins to disintegrate, but, again, some materials are left behind as the Jedi Knights focus their attentions on the Clone Wars. By the time the conflict is over, so few Jedi remain that none return to Exis to retreive the remaining records. It's not until six years after the Battle of Endor that Luke Skywalker and Tionne retreive the remaining records before the station is completely consumed by Teedio. It wasn't until Executor Sedriss discovered its existence, several years after the Battle of Endor, that its chambers were reopened. Since then, the Great Library has been controlled by the new Jedi Knights training under Master Luke Skywalker. Much of its contents remain a mystery, but Master Skywalker was hopeful that the knowledge it contained would again be revealed to the galaxy. Ilum Crystal Cave (Click For Picture) Located on the planet Ilum, this cave was similar in many respects to the Dark Side cave found on the planet Dagobah. The key difference was that, once a Jedi Padawan completed the test which was laid before him in the cave, the student could obtain an Ilum Crystal for use in their lightsaber. Often, the mouth of the cave was guarded by gorgodons which had climbed the mountain in search of food. Once inside, the Jedi student had to face any number of visions and voices, sometimes experiencing past events or facing their fears before reaching the crystal growths. Once a crystal was harvested, the student had to then meditate and construct their new lightsaber before emerging from the cave. Lining the walls of the cave's length were crued drawings left behind by Jedi students, giving a sort of history of the Jedi. Jedi Temple (Click For Picture) Located in the former Galactic City, on the planet Coruscant, this complex of spires and buildings was the base of operations for the Jedi Knights during the Old Republic. Construction of the Temple was proposed by the Jedi to the Galactic Senate some time after the Great Hyperspace War, and despite the Senate's desire to recognize the efforts of the Jedi in defeating the Sith, the Temple met with many obstacles. First, the Senate feared that a Jedi stronghold on Coruscant would increase the likelihood of another Sith invasion. Second, the Senate wanted to avoid any direct association of the Jedi Order with the government. The Jedi, however, had no intention of making either mistake, and established a training and meditation center that would serve as a temporary base of operations for the Jedi Council. In the aftermath of the Great Sith War, both the Jedi and the Senate agreed that a tighter union of their forces would be required to ensure the safety of the galaxy, and the Jedi Temple was allowed to expand and become the center of the Jedi Order. The central Temple Spire rose a kilometer above the surrounding cityscape, and was surrounded by four individual Council towers. All five towers were supported by the main building, which sunk its roots deep into Coruscant's crust. The ziggurat shape of the main building, coupled with the five spires, was meant to symbolize a padawans path to enlightment through the Force. There were several contemplation stations located on each of the four smaller towers, where a Jedi could go be alone with their thoughts. Each of the four towers faced one of the ordinal directions, and they bristled with antennae and sensors that provided the Jedi with continual information from across the galaxy. Many Jedi historians wondered at the placement of the Temple on Coruscant, where all native life had been swept from the planet by the millennia-long urbanization, and yet more than a trillion beings lived out their lifes. In the aftermath of the Jedi Purge of Emperor Palpatine, much of the Jedi Temple was destroyed, either by war or demolition. Jedi Master Luke Skywalker debated whether or not to build a new Temple, fearing that such a symbol of a centralized power structure may have led to the downfall of the earlier Jedi Order. Kabus-Dabeh This ancient city, located on the planet Muzara, was the site of a minor Dark Side nexus. It was shunned by the native Muza, who ordered Keval Raffaan to recover a bag of coins form the temple in the city to prove his worthiness as a Jedi Peacemaker. Kalakar Six This desolate moon was covered with active volcanoes and lava flows. Much of its crust was riddled with tunnels created by intense magma floes. Darth Vader was believed to have visited the moon shortly after the plans for the first Death Star were stolen by agents of the Alliance, hoping to intercept the plans and eliminate the rebels. Kalakar Six was rumored to have been a nexus of the Dark Side of the Force, a rumor which drew Baron Yorn and his followers to the moon a century before the Battle of Yavin. When Vader arrived on Kalakar Six, he discovered a group of Dark Side adherents who had become disillusioned with Vader himself, claiming that too much of Anakin Skywalker had remained in him. The information about the Alliance agents was planted by the heretics, to lure Vader to the moon. They created a clone of the Zabrak Sith Lord, Darth Maul, and hoped to have the clone defeat Vader. The adherents then planned to present the clone to Emperor Palpatine, as a testament to their devotion to the Dark Side of the Force. Unfortunately for them, Vader was able to defeat the clone, and Emperor Palpatine himself destroyed the adherents. Kodai This Outer Rim planet, covered with a vast ocean, was known as a nexus of Dark Side power, during the years surrounding the Battle of Naboo. The oceans of the planet followed an unusual, ten-year tide cycle which was caused by the two moons which orbited the planet. Every ten years, the tide receded so far as to leave much of the planet dry. Water from the oceans filled deep chasms and cracks in the honeycombed ocean floor, where it came into contact with the hot core of the planet. In a violent rush, much of the water was shot outward in steaming geysers, marking the end of the low-tide period. Once in a while, the return of the waters is strong enough to cause a massive tidal wave. One such wave occurred about 100 years prior to the Battle of Naboo, nearly wiping out the native Kodaian race. Most Kodaians fled the planet, rather than wait for another tidal wave to occur. Hidden deep below the ocean's surface was believed to be a Sith Holocron, which focused the Dark Side energies of the planet. The Holocron was sought after by the Jedi Knights as well as the Quermian professor, Murk Lundi, and was eventually recovered by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, some six years before the Clone Wars. Lake Krul During the time period that culminated in the Battle of Ruusan, a particularly evil dark side marauder named Kaox Krul roamed the galaxy. One of the strongest warriors to serve the Sith Lord Kaan and the Brotherhood of Darkness, Krul died in one of the skirmishes that led up to the battle between the forces of light and darkness. On a small, uninhabited world in the Mid Rim, Krul met a Jedi Knight and her Padawan learner in a fierce combat. The Jedi crash-landed on the planet after a wild battle and chase through the star system. Krul followed them to the surface and hunted the Jedi for two days before finally cornering them on the shore of a beautiful lake. Beside the quiet lake, under the glow of two small moons, the dark side marauder and the Jedi engaged in a life-or-death dance of violence. The Padawan fell first, brought down by Krul's flashing lightsaber. The Jedi Knight, grief-stricken by the death of her student, doubled her efforts. The clash between marauder and knight lasted until the first bright rays of dawn broke over the horizon. Jedi and marauder seemed to be too evenly matched. Tired, bruised, battered, and cut, the two continued to fight as the daytime sky filled with the dark clouds of a gathering storm. Rain began to splatter arround the combatants, and as the fight went on, both marauder and Jedi began to give in to their anger and hatred of one another. They both called upon the dark side. With invigorating dark side power coursing through both of them, the struggle became even more devastating. Thunder boomed around them with each punch and kick and lightsaber parry. Lightning danced over the surface of the lake and lanced into the ground around the warriors. The Jedi slashed. The marauder dodged and whirled. Thunder pealed. Lightsaber blades cracked and sparked and bounced off each other again and again. And the sky opened wide and unleashed a deluge of stinging rain. Krul, hoping to buy a moment of rest, wrapped himself in the Force and hovered over the center of the lake. The Jedi Knight, refusing to let the marauder escape, followed suit. They hurled their anger at each other through the Force as they met in the air above the churning waters of the lake. The storm intensified, as if spurred on by the combatants's fierce emotions. Krul's lightsaber struck high, the Jedi's weapon thrust low, and a wave of lightning washed over the two of them as each killing blow landed. Wrapped in the dark side of the Force, filled with anger and hatred, marauder and Jedi died in that moment, their ravaged bodies falling into the roiling waters and sinking below the windswept waves. In that moment, the lake changed. The trees and grass and bushes around it became twisted and dark. The surface of the water, once clear and bright, became muddy and dank and took on a sickly appearance. And so a dark side site was born. Lifewell This was the name of the construct used by the ancient Kathol to store their life energies, during the struggle bewteen the ancient Jedi Knights and the Dark Jedi who had enslaved the Kathol. The Kathol chose to store their energy in the Lifewell in order to survive the growing conflict, setting a bio-engineered construct (which later became known as DarkStryder) to guard the Lifewell. The Lifewell itself was essentially a huge, glowing, crystalline organ that pulsed with the life-energies of the ancient Kathol. The crystal's tip emerged in a secret chamber within DarkStryder's fortress, but extended for several kilometers straight down into the planet's mantle. The chamber which housed it was formed from huge bones, and was filled with organic, tactile control systems. Unfortunately for the majority of the Kathol, only a handful managed to enter the Lifewell before the destruction of their launch gates. The construct, which became known as DarkStryder, was designed to protect the Lifewell until the danger had passed. However, its own self-awareness kept it from releasing the Kathol. Over time, the Kathol were unable to break free of the Lifewell. Their life energies, however, evolved into the Ta-Ree. During the Battle of Kathol, the Lifewell was opened by Halbret, who had been awakened by the crew of the FarStar. Lost City of the Jedi A hidden, underground city found on Yavin Four, the Lost City of the Jedi was created long ago by the Jedi Knights. Its entrance is formed by a 2-meter cylinder of green marble hidden deep in the rain forests of the moon. The exact location of the entrance was kept secret by the Jedi, although the existence of the City has been known for years. Kadann even knew the City existed, but he never found the exact location. Once the circle of marble is opened, a tube-shaped transport descends to the city itself, which was a technological marvel of its day. The Jedi Library is located in the City, the storehouse of all the greatest Jedi lore and knowledge. In order to preserve the secret of the City and its location, the ancient Jedi programmed droids to guard and protect it. These droids were the only residents of the City until the Jedi Knights hid the boy Ken there, for safe keeping until he could emerge as a Jedi. The City was eventualy damaged in the battles between Trioculus and the New Republic, and was shut down and cut off. Malrev Sith Temple (Click For Picture) This is a temple which was built on a nexus of Dark Side energy on the planet Malrev, a temple which was to be used as an outpost by Emperor Palpatine before he was killed at Endor. The temple later served as the base of power for the mad Devaronian Cartariun, who had been serving as a technician at the site. Cartariun used the Sith magics to control the native Irrukiine and make them fight using the powers of the Dark Side. Any person can tap into the power of the Temple and use the Dark Side of the Force, even if they are not Force sensitive. The temple was later destroyed by Rogue Squadron. Meditative Canyon (Click For Picture) Located on the planet Ambria, in the shadows of the Tiernvael Mountains, the Medtitative Canyon was discovered by the Jedi Master Thon, during the years leading up to the Great Sith War. It was also located near the site on which an ancient Sith obelisk was believed to have been erected. Despite this proximity to a Dark Side nexus, Master Thon and his students found that the Canyon offered them a place of peace and tranquility, where they could find spiritual solace from the rest of the galaxy. The Canyon itself was just over a kilometer in length, and as much as a kilometer deep at certain points. A surging river swept through the base of the Canyon, sometimes spanning the Canyon's half-kilometer width. At one end of the Canyon, this river tumbled over a steep waterfall. Despite its connection to the Light Side of the Force, the Meditative Canyon was almost devoid of life, with just a few neeks crawling along its rocky sides. Mountains of Lightning This crystalline rock formation, found near the city of Hweg Shul on Nam Chorios, is thought to be the source of the strange Force lightning storms which sweep the planet's valleys. Seti Ashgad maintained a residence there. Obsidian Temple Located on Yavin's fourth moon, it was the site of a huge, obsidian temple shaped like a huge split pyramid. The temple was shaped this way to help concentrate The Force and enhance the Sith rituals that took place inside. Atop the split pyramid is an obsidian statue of Exar Kun. Oracle at Pelgrin (Click For Picture) Located on the planet Pelgrin, this unusual device was created millions of years ago by the Pelgrin race. The facility which housed the Oracle stood some ten stories in height, being formed on dieuw tree wood and reinforced with metal, and contained a complex network of gears, switches, and pendulums. A central shaft reached from the base of the Oracle to its pinnacle, where a single chamber was situated. The initial discovery team, led by Ermin Phin-Mar some 3,000 years before the Battle of Naboo, was unable to restart the Oracle, but Phin-Mar ascertained that it was originally created as an astronomical device that held a religious or predictive place in Pelgrin culture. This led to its description as an Oracle. However, further investigation by the Jedi who accompanied Phin-Mar, Shannur Darkstar, revealed that the Oracle had some deep connection to the Force. When Darkstar first tried to puzzle her way through to a better understanding of the Oracle by meditating in the upper chamber, she brought the machine back to life. Rather than being operated by a crew of Pelgrins, the Oracle operated on the energy of the Force. Darkstar herself had a vision of a great war, and many other Jedi who arrived on Pelgrin also saw devastating events in the future. Popular rumors sprang up that the Pelgrins foresaw their own destruction in the Oracle, depsite the fact that there was no evidence to support such a theory. The most intriguing mystery of the Oracle was the fact that it required an individual with a strong connection to the Force to operate it, although there was no record of the Pelgrins having any Force-sensitivity. Because of the catastrophic nature of the visions experienced in the Oracle, the Jedi Council requested that access to the Oracle be restricted, while scientists claimed that the Jedi were creating a false sense of evil around the Oracle to keep it for themselves. The Old Republic Senate sided with the Jedi, but allowed a few state-sponsored investigations. The Jedi Knights began to catalogue the visions which were reported, and only began to see the truth of the predictions decades later, when certain events the Oracle foresaw actually came to pass. The most disastrous visions, such as that experienced by Shannur Darkstar, took millennia to occur. Unfortunately, the Oracle was destroyed by a group of pirates during the last decades of the Old Republic. These pirates had been hired in secret by Chancellor Palpatine himself, out of fear that the Jedi Knights might discern his plans to take control of the galaxy. Sith Academy This was the name given to the training facility established by the Sith on the planet Korriban, during the build-up to the Great Sith War. The facility continued to operate during the war, producing multitudes of soldiers and warriors imbued with the Dark Side of the Force. Temple Atun One of the Massassi temples on Yavin 4, Atun was left untouched by the Alliance and the Jedi Students after them. Luke Skywalker wanted to keep the temple in its deteriorated condition so that the Jedi could have a link to the Massassi on which to meditate. He often went there to be alone and reflect on the galaxy. Temple of Fire (Click For Picture) One of the ancient Massassi temples on Yavin 4, it was here that Exar Kun herded all the ancient Massassi people before he drained them of all their life-energy in order to preserve his own spirit in the Dark Side of the Force. Temple of the Blueleaf Cluster One of the ancient, elaborate Sith structures found in the jungles of Yavin Four. It was nearly destroyed when Vice Admiral Pellaeon and his fleet of Imperial-class Star Destroyers attacked the temple, thinking it was the primary site of Luke Skywalker's Jedi academy. It houses a huge, crystalline object deep inside its main chamber. This crystal glows and throbs with apparent life, filling the chamber with an eerie blue light. The crystal is oily to the touch, and is charged with static electricity. There are reports that the crystal is filled with the spirits of the long-dead Massassi people, and that their faces can be seen inside the crystal. Luke and Brakiss met here during the Shadow Academy's attack on Yavin 4, but Luke was unable to sway Brakiss from the Dark Side. The Dark Temple Some Rebels suspected Yavin IV had an evil history. General Jan Dodonna ordered the Temple of the Blueleaf Cluster sealed, wary of the pulsating cold blue light that stood in its foreboding main chamber. But the strangest of the Massassi temples stood on a small island in a circular lake with a flat, mirrorlike surface, forming stepping stones for visitors. The temple was made of polished dark transparisteel, with a split apex topped by an ebon statue of an ancient lord. Inside, pictographs and hieroglyphics etched the obsidian walls, the panels broken by priceless Corusca gems. The temple was built as a private retreat for Exar Kun; when Skywalker's students discovered the place, they couldn't know that the Sith Lord's spirit still survived. The Great Temple Located on Yavin's fourth moon, in ancient times it was the center of the Massassi civilization. When Exar Kun arrived on the moon and used the Massassi souls to power his own greed, he destroyed the Massassi, and the temple was abandoned to the relentless jungle. When the Alliance needed a remote base, it chose Yavin 4 for its huge temples, and set up their primary command center in the Great Temple. Following the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance abandonded the base, and it lay empty until Luke Skywalker asked Mon Mothma for a place to train the new Jedi Knights. She suggested Yavin 4, and Luke set up his Jedi praxeum in the Great Temple. The temple has five distinct levels, plus an observation level at the very top. The temple stood for several years before it was attacked by the Shadow Academy. The shields which protected it were destroyed by Commander Orvak, who also placed several proton grenades in the Temple. He hoped to bring the Temple down on itself, but his explosives only damaged minor areas of the structure. Luke chose to rebuild the Temple, rather than relocate, because it was still salvageable and it would help his students train and rehabilitate after the attack. A trader from Tatooine loaned the use of a Ronto to assist in moving the large chunks of rock which could be found, and the Temple quickly began to retake its shape. The Temple's rebirth only lasted a few years, until the Yuuzhan Vong realized that they could capture the students at the Jedi training center for use in determining the source of The Force. Then, when a team of Shapers was sent to Yavin 4, the Temple was razed and "eaten" by five huge damuteks to make room for the Shapers' complex. The Knowledge Bank Located near the Quarren reef city of Coral Depths, the Knowledge Bank is an unassuming collection of mollusks sitting on a protected coral shelf 12 meters deep. Only a few Mon Cals and Quarren, most of them high-ranking leaders or lifelong ecclesiastics, know that these clams make up a communal overmind. For millennia, the Knowledge Bank has passively recorded the ocean's history through its Force-bond with all of Mon Calamari's lifeforms. Those who desire information from the Knowledge Bank must phrase their requests in a rythmic, hypnotics language in which only a handful are fluent. The mollusks communicate telepathically by transmitting images and sounds from the requested event directly into the callers' brains. People who wish to consult with the Knowledge Bank willing to reveal the location of this sacred resource, then enlist someone who speaks the mollusks' language (usually a scholar or priest) to translate the information request. A Force-sensitive being may communicate with the Knowledge Bank directly, by using telepathy. People doing this can make one request per day and must be in open water (in other words, not in a submersible or similar vehicle) to communicate with the Knowledge Bank. The Tree This was the name used by Besaama to describe the unusual tree that served as the portal to the hidden lair of the Wyrd, on the planet Cularin, during the last years of the Old Republic. The Tree appeared to have been recently struck by lightning, with smoke leaking from its knotholes and a warm fire burning at its heart. A hidden switch inside one of the knotholes opened a small door, although only members of the Wyrd knew of the switch's location. It was believed that the Tree was a nexus of Dark Side energy, and could actually call out to Force-sensitive individuals and draw them to its location. Thule Sith Temple (Click For Picture) This large, imposing building at the center of Hurom covers more than a block and dominates the cityscape. The dark side is so strong here that anyone who is Force-sensitive,but not at least tainted by the dark side, will not be able to function at their full capacity while in its influence. The temple is a meeting place for government leaders and Sith priests, and it serves as a commissioning center for all outgoing troops. Trinta This swampy planet was the site of a nexus of the energies of the Dark Side of the Force. The fifth planet orbiting the star Yartiv, Trinta was first discovered by the Ithorians, but even the nature-loving Ithorians disliked the planet immediately. They named it for the realms of demons in their mythology and left it alone. More than ninety percent of the planet was covered with fetid swamps, with the remaining area dotted by tiny islands and mudbanks. Many decades later, the nexus flared and engulfed the entire planet after Halagad Ventor arrived on the planet, fleeing the Jedi Purge and Darth Vader. It orbited the red star Yartiv, in a sector of the Outer Rim Territories. Several attempts have been made to colonize the planet in the modern era, but the Dark Side nexus drove the settlers mad before too long. Trinta's gravity was somewhat less than standard, but the difference was often made up by the deep mud which covered most of the planet. Valley of the Dark Lords (Click For Picture) This valley, located on the planet Korriban, was the site of the tombs of the ancient Dark Lords of the Sith. The valley itself was located far from Dreshdae, and was continually covered by clouds. It was dominated by huge funereal temples and tombs, with an ornate altar at the far end. The Valley was more than 1,200 meters deep in some places, although it was little more than a slit in the ground, and much of the rock which made up its walls had been carved with magical Sith runes and glyphs to ward off unwanted spirits and intruders. In additon to these runes, a wide variety of sculptures and reliefs adorned the Valley walls, portraying the heroics of the Sith Lords buried there. It was believed that the structure and placement of the tombs was designed to concentrate and focus the power of the Dark Side of the Force, allowing the spirits of the ancient Sith Lords to remain closeby. Valley of the Jedi (Click For Picture) Located on the planet Ruusan, this valley was believed to have been an ancient, hidden, Jedi burial ground whose existence was considered a mere legend until Morgan Katarn discovered its exact location. In reality, the Valley was located near the site of the decisive struggle in the Battle of Ruusan, in which Lord Kaan and the Brotherhood and Darkness unleashed a thought bomb on Lord Hoth and the Army of Light. In the wake of the battle, Jedi Knight Johun Othone established a memorial to the fallen Jedi, naming it the Valley of the Jedi. Wondrous statues and a huge mausoleum were erected in the valley to honor the forces of Lord Hoth. The stone used to create these memorials came from hundreds of planets, symbolizing the diversity of Lord Hoth's forces. At one end of the Valley, Othone placed a huge Adegan crystal in a special chamber, as a place where Jedi Knights could meditate on their place in the galaxy. However, over the centuries, interest in the Battle of Ruusan faded, and the Jedi Council - which had prohibited the construction of the memorial in the first place - chose to forget about Ruusan entirely. Thus, the Valley of the Jedi disappeared from the public consciousness. The natives of Ruusan, an unusual race known only as the Bouncers, believed that the spirits trapped in the Valley would only be set free when a Knight arrived to upset the natural balance. The Jedi Knight Qu Rahn tried to keep the Valley's location a secret until he could secure it, but the Dark Jedi Jerec murdered Rahn and Morgan Katarn in order to discover its location and use it for himself. Kyle Katarn, Morgan's son, successfully defeated Jerec and his Dark Jedi in the Valley itself, preventing them from abusing the Valley's power. Kyle shared the secret of the Valley's location with only one other individual, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, so that the site could be investigated by the Jedi and not misused by their enemies. |
