Taozin (Click For Picture) A taozin is a gigantic, translucent invertebrate, effectively invisible to the Force. Native to the jungle moon of Va'art near the Roche asteroid field, Taozin have been found on other worlds from time to time. The flesh and internal organs of a Taozin allow most light to pass through it. Only its large, black eyes and small, regular nodules on its chitinous outer shell reflect any light; recent meals can sometimes still be seen slowly dissolving in its digestive tract. A Taozin's translucency allows it to remain inconspicuous in low-light conditions. Similarly, Taozin can evade efforts to be detected or located using the Force. Their "invisibility" to the Force makes Taozin dangerous to Jedi for more than one reason. Their translucent flesh is permeated with tiny, crystalline structures that actually diffuse light energy. While this may partially account for their translucency, it also means that most blaster weapons and Lightsabers cannot harm them. A collection of small arms studded its front sections, while a series of thick legs ran along the sides of its body. The head of the taozin was armed with a pair of meter-long mandibles. A Taozin can spew a silky gray adhesive from glands located just inside its mouth. For the most part, Taozin use this substance to create pathways in the large open areas they inhabit. Because they can spit the webbing a considerable distance, it makes for a useful weapon as well - especially considering how slowly a Taozin approaches its prey. It was discovered by the droid I-5YQ that the skin nodules of a taozin could be severed from the body, and yet still were invisible to the Force, as Lorn Pavan used one nodule to sneak up on Darth Maul. Tarasin (Click For Picture) The Tarasin are a tribal species of omnivorous reptillian humanoids native to Cularin, a predominantly tropical world. They inhabit the planet's sprawling jungles and rain forests. Although the Tarasin enjoyed a peaceful first contact with Human explorers during the time of the Old Republic, their dealings with offworlders soured when trading companies began plundering Cularin's natural resources, uprooting entire forests. The Tarasin, sensitive to the Force, believed in living harmonlously with the land, rather than exploiting its bounty as the newcomers did. They fought back with surprising ferocity. A treaty helped avert further bloodshed. A friendship, stained at first, grew as the Tarasins and the outsiders got to know each other and started to pursue their own agendas. As more alien species arrived on Cularin, the Tarasin worried more about the future of their home. The offworlders built their cities on platforms that rose above the forest canopies, preserving the natural environment while giving the visitors a palce to call home. However, the Tarasin denied certain companies access to the planet's resources and were particularly protective of the ch'hala trees that were sacred to their religion. Words escalated into violence. The trading companies decided to send armed troops down with their workers and droids to avoid losing valuable equipment. Tarasin reprisals were swift and deadly. The Tarasin tribes demonstrated that they could use the technology of their alien adversaries, and their natural abilities with the Force made them devastating in combat. The Jedi refused to intervene in the Tarasin Revolt, The Trade Federation, holding major interests on Cularin, sent war droids to secure their operations and protect their crews. The droids interpreted their orders loosely and decimated the nearby Tarasin tribes in a brutal raid. This outrage prompted a series of bloody counterattacks. Ultimately, the Jedi Order felt compelled to intervene and sent two Jedi consulars to negotiate a new treaty. The Tarasin refused to give in to outsider demands, and after six months of tense negotiations, all sides agreed to an accord called the Cularin Compact, sharply curtailing the outsiders' ability to harm the planet. For their part, the Tarasin struggled to work with the offworlders, allowing them to harvest limited resources while protecting the planet's ecological balance. Later years saw many conflicts among the various trading companies and cartels for control of Cularin's resources, but few of these conflicts involved or affected the Tarasin directly. During the Rebellion era, the Empire seized control of all mining operations on Cularin, but the Imperials did nothing to invite conflict with the Tarasin. The planet had little to offer, and the Imperials regarded the Tarasin as a primitive, backward species with little potential. The Tarasin hid their mastery of the Force, and unsubstained rumors persisted that at least a handful of Jedi took refuge among the Tarasin after escaping the Jedi Purge. The fall of the Empire spelled the return of trading cartels, but the New Republic was quick to reinstate the Cularin Compact, ensuring that these companies would not despoil the planet. The Tarasin enjoyed their diplomatic dealings with the New Republic, and a few Force-strong Tarasin have even expressed interest in joining the New Jedi Order to help repel the Yuuzhan Vong. Most Tarasin dwell in tribal villages. Their tribes, called irstats, are small (between thirty and fifty members each) and led by a chieftain (called the Irstat-Kes), usually the second oldest female in the tribe. They refer to the eldest female in the irstat simply as "Mother," holding her up as a model of perfection. Tarasin are calm, communal, and curious. They fiercely protect their world and its resources, rarely getting violently angry unless their world or their tribes are threatened. The average Tarasin stands 3.6 to 1.7 meters tall and has a body covered with translucent scales. The skin beneath the scales changes color, reflecting the Tarasin's emotional state and enabling it to better camouflage itself. Among the distinguishing parts of the Tarasin form were the kampo, the Tarasin name for their head-fan, and the sa'tosin, the quills which grew from the backs of their forearms. Tarasin have a rich oral tradition and speak their own language, Tarasinese. Their hunters also use a silent form of communication that relies on their color-changing scales. A more complex form of communication is achieved by simply changing the colors of the fingers on one hand, rather than openly expressing oneself by changing their body color. Naturally, a Tarasin is the light green color of the horonna plant's leaves. White skintone indicated joy, while black signified the end of a conversation. Orange skintone, when similar to that of the gargrell flower, indicated that the Tarasin was angry or irritated, depending on the intensity of the coloration. When a Tarasin changed its skin color to purple - a color which didn't naturally exist in the ecosystem of Cularin - it was often done in one's home, and indicated amusement. Yellow, like the vine of the arrgrar, indicated illness in an individual, while blue indicated a level of respect or deference on the part of the speaker. Because of their relationship with the planet, most Tarasin will only travel off-planet for very short periods of time, and only for a short distance. Tempestro This race of sapient creatures was native to the planet known as Koda's World. They are a warrior race, descended from a gentle and proud civilization. Millennia before the Galactic Civil War, the Tempestro's ancestors had a great mastery of the Force and were incredibly spiritual. This belief in a higher power, and a lack of modern technology, left them unprepared for an asteroid strike. The impact threw up a huge dust cloud which exterminated much of the Tempestro civilization. The survivors stored all their knowledge in a stone temple and eked out a meager existence. Those modern Tempestro understand that the temple is important, but have forgotten exactly why. When they were discovered by Krin Koda, he provided medicines to cure a ravaging disease. In return, the Tempestro gave him the Eye of Koda. They resemble large, winged reptiles which can glide great distances. Their heads are long and thin, dominated by sharp beaks and a bony spike projecting from the back of their skull. The edges of their wings are covered with serrated scales. Much of their current civilization is based on the trees of the planet. They are slightly telepathic, a remnant of their former ability to use the Force. During his attempt to gain the powerful Eye of Koda, Dhar Bullwin used his magic to enslave a population of Tempestro, using them to combat a gorup of scouts who were also on the trail of the Eye. Terentatek (Click For Picture) This unusual creature was native to the planet Korriban, and had been twisted into a grotesque form during its evolution by its contact with the Dark Side of the Force. The ancient Sith Lords used terentateks to guard the tombs that were carved into the Valley of the Dark Lords. Through their evolution they have somehow built up a natural resistance to the Force, and so it is extremely difficult to use Force powers on them. Some time before Darth Revan and Darth Malak rose to power, the Jedi Council had ordered several Jedi to hunt all Terentatek’s and kill them. This proved to be harder than the Jedi Council had imagined, and earned the Terentatek’s the title Jedi Killers. Tirrith This unusual lifeform, found on the planet Beheboth, emitted a psychometric display of lights and sound that could render a human unconscious in a matter of minutes. The Tirrith had an empathic culture, in which the feelings of one part were shared by the entire organism. The few scientists who traveled to Beheboth during the early years of the New Republic were unable to ascertain whether or not the Tirrith was a single organism made up of millions of individual minds, or whether they existed in several thousand colonies of various sizes. When a colony of Tirrith was captured by Gideon Longspar, it was forced to do his bidding until Luke Skywalker arrived on Beheboth. Longspar realized that the Tirrith exuded a mild form of knockout gas, that could be used to incapacitate individuals in combat. Longspar kept his Tirrith in a special container, releasing them when needed. Luke's contact with the Force allowed him to help free the Tirrith, after defeating Longspar in battle. The Tirrith then used their unusual abilities to seed Beheboth's atmosphere, gratefully helping to end the centuries-long drought by causing rains to fall. Shortly afterward, however, Mils Giel and his assistants, Malka and Kimp Minmirn, captured a small hive of Tirrith and began to experiment with them, creating a mutant variant of Tirrith that only wanted to kill anything it came into contact with. Contained in speciallized globes, these Tirrith were part of a living bomb that Giel believed would become the Empire's next superweapon. Under Minmirn's manipulations, these mutant Tirrith could exude a toxic version of their knockout gas, capable of killing any being in range. These Tirrith could also inflict a "mind scream" onto the mind of a Force-sensitive individual, rendering them unconscious for a short time. Evidence of Giel's plans was discovered by Luke Skywalker, in the journals kept by Malka, and this evidence was used to generate a search for Giel, in an effort to put an end to his experiments on the Tirrith. Toydarian (Click For Picture) The Toydarian homeworld is mostly covered with nutrient-rich muck lakes that support a number of dangerous predators. The Toydarians' ancestors survived by flying over the muck and living on relatively safe algae mats. While they appear pudgy, the Toydarians are actually some of the lightest sentient beings in the galaxy; their body tissues are spongy and filled with gas, making their pot bellies function like helium balloons. Toydarian newborns emerge from theit mothers' wombs fully developed, resembling miniature versions fo their parents, and are able to fly from birth. The species prefers to fly everywhere, something that requires a great deal of energy, so they are constantly eating. The skies of Toydaria are filled with buzzing Toydarians, so starship traffic to and from the world's single spaceport is strictly regulated to specific times of the day. Airspeeders are prohibited due to the world's heavy "air traffic." The Toydarian government built a light rail system to ferry offworlders from city to city. While Toydarians have incorporated some galactic-level technology into their daily lives, they prefer to dwell in small villages that are far below the galactic standard technologically. Like many other worlds within Hutt Space, Toydaria remained nearly untouched by Imperial rule. Food shortages would frequently trigger skirmishes among rival communities, but overall, Toydarians lead a quiet, airborne existence, their daily routines broken only with the occasional visiting merchant. Toydaria remains a sleepy corner of the galaxy well into The New Jedi Order era. The Toydarian brain, though no more complex than a Human or near-Human brain, possesses an unusual structure that resists mental domination through the Force. Shrewd bargainers, Toydarians like to socialize and strike deals. The best of them is proud, loyal, and business-savvy; the worst of them is greedy, deceitful, and sycophantic. Toydarians like to gamble, and more daring Toydarian traders will make difficult business decisions based on the roll of a chance cube. A Toydarian is a short, potbellied humanoid with large eyes, a broad mouth flanked by small tusks, thin arms, and spindly legs that end in webbed feet. Skin tones range from blue to green to pink. Small, rapidly fluttering wings sprout from the Toydarian's back. Toydarian males often grow sparse beards. Adults stand between 0.9 meters and 1.5 meters tall. Toydarians speak basic easily, although they're more likely to converse in Toydarian or Huttese. The latter is a bonus language for Toydarians, who have a long tradition of commerce with the Hutts. Toydarian adventurers, rare as they are, tend to be fringers or scoundrels. No Toydarian Force-users are known or believed to exist. Trailian This humanoid race, native to the planet Trailia, had a strong affinity to the Force. Tsil/Spook-Crystals/Smokies (Click For Picture) Tsils are mineral-based life-forms on the planet Nam Chorios that look like green and purple crystal chimney formations. The planet's Oldtimers, descendants of the planet's original settlers, named them after the small ground electrical storms the tsils incite that last five to ten minutes. They also nicknamed them smokies or spook-crystals because of their unusual colors and properties. While Oldtimers remain unaffected by the electrical storms the tsils produce, newcomers are left sick for a day and a half if any of the charges pass through them. The Tsils are the source of Force-sensitivity inherent to Nam Chorios. By magnifying life and light energy around them, they increase the power of the Force on that world. Even the slightest excercise of Force power on the planet can set off a raging Force storm, as Luke Skywalker discovered. Tsils communicate telepathically and empathically by implanting images in another being's mind. The Oldtimers religious leaders, especially the prophet Theras, could "hear" these voices. The Tsils warned Theras about the Death Seed plague caused by the insects known as the drochs. The Tsils instructed the prophet to prevent any ship large enough to support powerful shielding from landing or leaving their world. Since the drochs were weakened by the sunlight reflected by the Tsils, they could not be permitted to reach the lightless void of space, where they would be free to spread their contagion. The Tsils have lived on Nam Chorios since the planet first formed. Nine years after the Battle of Endor, thousands of Tsils were callously mined as minerals and altered so they could be used for various technological purposes. Officially, surveyors used them in optical equipment that filters light for K-class planets, but the Loronar Corporation secretly employed them in Centrally Controlled Independant Replicant (CCIR) technology, remote-controlled "brain" technology used in synthdroids and Needle starfighters. An engineering specification from Loronar Corporation states how the crystals can be reprogrammed and what that accomplishes. "The crystals can be tuned to focus solar energy into microscopic beams of light that power all autonomic responses of the replicant's systems. They do this wit the efficiency of nerve cells in a Human body. The gray channels in the crystal, which act as power streams, redirect impulses in any manner we choose, but they must be altered for that purpose. They are, without question, the most pliable and potent means of transferring focused energy that we have found to date." These atrocities enraged the Tsil population. Despite the reprogrammed state of the Tsils who were removed, they maintained contact with their relatives, often over great distances. When, in a second incident, the remaining Tsil once again helped stop the drochs from escaping Nam Chorios, they asked Luke Skywalker to provide some assurance that the stolen Tsils would be returned, no matter their condition. New Republic Intelligence quickly announced a galaxywide recall, which has been successful in recovering a majority of the wayward crystals. Vornskr (Click For Picture) The dreaded Vornskr is a unique canine predator native to Myrkr. Quadrupedal, they have long legs and sharp claws. Their heads have narrow, forward-set eyes, small pointed ears, long muzzles, and fang-filled jaws. Vornskrs are lean creatures whose taut muscles give them great speed and strength. Their bodies are covered in a short layer of dark fur, and they have whiplike tails. While at first glance fairly typical predators, Vornskrs are unusual because they have natural sensitivity to the Force and Force-users. They are all Force-sensitive, and thus are very difficult to surprise. Vornskrs are the natural enemies of Ysalamiri, always attacking when the predators find a group of them. However, the Ysalamiri's natural ability to push back the Force makes it difficult for Vornskrs to detect them. A Vornskr that senses a Force-user usually mistakes him for a Ysalamiri and attacks ferociously. Vornskrs are mostly inactive during daylight hours, but are fierce nocturnal hunters. They generally hunt in small packs of three to five, although mated couples also hunt by themselves. A Vornskr's senses are not as keen as those of most predators, although their Force abilities more than make up for this weakness. Vornskrs are very stealthy, and often manage to surprise their prey. Vornskrs are also cunning fighters who team up against particularly powerful opponents. They flee when seriously injured unless attacking a Force-user, in which case they fight to the death. Vornskrs are normally too fierce and wild to be tamed. Even the most talented animal handlers find them a challenge. However, for some unknown reason, Vornskrs that have their tails clipped short lose a great deal of their aggression. This makes them less effective combatants, but allows them to be trained as pets and guards. Tamed Vornskrs are still enraged bt Force-users and attack them ferociously - no known training can break them of this behaviour. When attacking, Vornskrs claw with their forepaws and bite with their powerful jaws. Vornskrs also attack with their poisonous tails, causing rashes or paralysis. Vornskrs use their Force abilities to boost their combat abilities as a matter of course, generally activating a few powers before attacking their prey. Whenever a Vornskr deals wound damage with a tail attack, the victim has a chance of being paralyzed by the poison for anywhere between 2 and 12 minutes. Voxyn (Click For Picture) Bio-engineered by the Yuuzhan Vong from the genetic material of a vornskr and a freo xyn from their own galaxy, the voxyn was a large creature designed to seek out and destroy any being which used the Force. They moved about on eight curved legs, and measured a meter in height and four meters in length. The flat head of a voxyn was dominated by a wide mouth which could regurgitate the acidic contents of its stomach and belch them at a target. This brown mucus attacked anything it came in contact with, and could destroy living flesh in a matter of minutes. Its black scales protects its body like armor, and its dorsal ridge was lined with sensory spines. A white barb studded the end of its whiplike tail. The Yuuzhan Vong bred voxyn to combat the Jedi Knights, using a laboratory based on the worldship Baanu Rass, in orbit around Myrkr, to create a queen from which all other voxyn were cloned and bred. The average voxyn had only a short lifespan after being released from the laboratory, since they required a nutrient compound which was only found on Myrkr, but were more than equipped to make the most of their lives. The Yuuzhan Vong Shapers who were responsible for creating the voxyn discovered that the creatures went wild in the presence of an ysalamiri, losing their natural cunning and going insane. Their beady, yellow eyes were virtually useless until the voxyn located its prey and got close enough to attack it. One of the voxyn's more formidable attack methods was to screech out an intense blastwave of sound, which rendered most beings incapacitated. The blood of a voxyn was also unique, having the ability to transmutate into a neurotoxin exposed to most kinds of air. The toepads of a voxyn were infested with dozens of forms of retroviruses, all but rendering a single antidote useless in the event of infection. Even the tail of the voxy, a holdover from its vornskr origins, administered a neural shock when it touched exposed flesh. All in all, the voxyn was engineered for just one thing: to kill a Jedi Knight. The Jedi realized this, and launched a desparate plan to eliminate the queen at Myrkr. Although many Jedi died in the attempt - including Anakin Solo - the voxyn queen was eventually destroyed when it was led into a dovin basal and consumed by the gravity well. Only a single clone remained of the voxyn species, which Warmaster Tsavong Lah maintained for future use against the Jedi. From this clone he managed to grow six more voxyn before the Battle of Ebaq, which were used to locate any Jedi on Ebaq 9. Wookiee (Click For Picture) Tall, fur-covered bipeds from Kashyyyk, Wookiees are perhaps best-known known for their fierce style of fighting. Believed to be descended from tree-climing mammalians, they live in the trees above Kashyyyk's carnivorous flora. They have retractable claws that they use for climbing in the trees. The females have six breasts that are used to feed their live-born litters, which are born after about a standard year's gestation. The baby Wookiees are nearly four feet in length at birth. They were enslaved by the Empire, and don't enjoy the presence of humans, even after the Alliance freed them. Obi-Wan Kenobi once hinted that Wookiees had a strong affinity with the Force. The Wookiee Storybook infers that Wookiees are not native to Kashyyyk, but came to the planet a long time ago. Yammosk (Click For Picture) This Yuuzhan Vong bio-creation was known among the elite warrior class as the war coordinator. The creature, with its bulbous head and array of tentacles, served to coordinate all activities of an invasion fleet toward a single goal. The creation of the first yammosk took many centuries, but in the end the creature proved to be a valuable asset. It could coordinate landing operations, starfighter battles, and even full-scale seiges. It had a virtually limitless supply of energy. The creature's only solid bodily structure was a single tooth, hidden with boneless flesh. The tooth was used to bury itself into a landing area, and was driven against the ground with incredible force. Eventually, it could break through even rock and ice, and the yammosk would then insinuate itself into the created crevasse and begin coordinating the invasion forces. Any enemy ships that got too close to the yammosk's position would be rendered inoperable by the intense energy the creature used to bind the Yuuzhan Vong forces together. Like most Yuuzhan Vong technology, the yammosk kept track of other Yuuzhan Vong starships by tracking their unique gravitic signatures. The only drawback of the yammosk was that, if it were ever severely injured or destroyed, the Yuuzhan Vong war force would be without any guiding force and would collapse in chaos. A Yuuzhan Vong prefect or other ranking official could commune with the yammosk by gently touching the thick, blue vein that ran between its eyes. Once the yammosk was entrenched in its new position, it could spawn a second yammosk to assist in the establishment of the next Yuuzhan Vong base. The parent yammosk would form a mental link with the offspring, transferring all knowledge it would need to act as the next war coordinator. However, the immature yammosk still had to grow strong, and the Yuuzhan Vong discovered that they grew faster if they were in contact with living bodies. Thus, the Yuuzhan Vong began capturing beings and forcing them to remain in the nutrient vats with the yammosk, giving it ready contact with life-energies. One additional benefit of this contact was that the yammosk could sense the presence of the Force, which allowed the Yuuzhan Vong to recognize the presence of a Jedi Knight in their midst. After the New Republic began to search out and destroy the yammosk at the heart of an invasion fleet, the Yuuzhan Vong began to train their pilots to act without a yammosk's guidance, giving the pilots more authority over the actions of their ships in case a yammosk was destroyed. Yinchorri (Click For Picture) This species of reptilian humanoids was native to the planet Yinchorr, and was known for their immunity to manipulations of the Force. When the Yinchorr system was first charted five centuries before the Battle of Yavin, explorers found it resource-poor and unworthy of colonization. Further, the Yinchorri were deemed too primitive to be any great boon to the Republic, so they were largely ignored until a year before the Battle of Naboo, when they joined the Republic. They gained interstellar travel capabilities, most likely from stolen technology, shortly after their admission into the Galactic Senate. The Yinchorri were quick to pick up and use any form of technology, including starships and weapons, and quickly learn how to subjugate their neighbors. They also discovered the usefulness of cortosis armor, when they learned it was capable of stopping a Lightsaber. The Yinchorri developed a form of military transportation based on the wings of insects, with a powerpack which strapped to their backs and six thin wings for propulsion. Unfortunately for the Yinchorr, they were not exceptionally intelligent, and were drawn into the machinations of Darth Sidious, who used their aggressiveness to begin attacking the Republic outposts and, later, the Jedi Knights themselves. After an attack on Mayvitch 7, the Jedi Knights were called in to put an end to the Yinchorri conquests. Only after taking many losses were the Jedi able to quell the Yinchorri by destroying their base on Uhanayih and forcing the Yinchorri to surrender. Slavers quickly learned to avoid the Yinchorr star system, as the Yinchorri made terrible slaves - they tended to fight to the death rather than be enslaved, while individuals were so uncooperative that they either starved themselves to death or had to be put down. Until shortly before the Battle of Endor, the Yinchorri lived in city states, with each community fielding its own army and having its own leaders, usually a Council of Elders. Each city-state had a number of satelite communities that grew food and mined resources for the central city, and a city's power was measured by how many smaller settlements are needed to keep it supplied. For many centuries, Tol-Kachorn was the mightiest of all Yinchorri city-states, with nearly one hundred villages and five other cities and attendant communities under its rule. Other cities occasionally tried to equal or rival Tol-Kachorn, which led to brutal campaigns of conquest, followed by widespread chaos in the region once the emerging empire collapsed. The Yinchorri initially went unnoticed and undisturbed by the Emperor's New Order; as the system contained few resources, no one felt the need to call attention to the obstinate species that dwelled there. The one exception - and on of Yinchorr's greatest tragedies - was when the system's Imperial governor decided the Yinchorri could serve as the perfect bait in a plot to capture Princess Leia (and advance his career past a dead-end posting in a useless star system). He captured the leaders of the various Yinchorri councils of elders and offered to trade their lives back to the Yinchorri in exchange for Leia. The Yinchorri people felt that the life of one Human was an adequate price for their beloved elders, so they set a trap for the Rebel leader. When the governor tried to double-cross the Yinchorri, the angry natives overthrew him and his regime. After becoming fully aware of the evil of the Empire, the Tol-Kachorn council of elders threw their support behind the Rebel Alliance. As the Rebellion established bases in the Yinchorr system, other Yinchorri city-states offered their warriors and starships in the fight as well. The Empire punished the Yinchorri for their revolt. The sector's Moff, with the full blessing of the Imperial High Command, ordered a massive assault against Yinchorr, and shortly after the fall of Echo Base on Hoth, the Rebel bases in the Yinchorr system were leveled. The cities of Yinchorri were also pounded to rubble by orbital bombardment - even the long history of mighty Tol-Kachorn ended that day. The surviving Yinchorri were reduced to living as nomadic tribes. The devastation on Yinchorr came to the Emperor's personal attention a few months later, and shortly before the Battle of Endor he ordered all training facilities of his elite personal guard to be consolidated in that system. Yinchorr remained under Imperial domination until nearly a decade after the destruction of the Yinchorri cities; the system was liberated by New Republic forces as part of the campaign to reclaim territory seized by the forces led by what was reportedly the Emperor's clone. The surviving Yinchorri came together under the banner of the last son of the leader of Tol-Kachorn's Elder Council. They have since settled in the heavily defended complex once used as the headquarters of The Emperor's Imperial Guard and are currently trying to rebuild their civilization. Yinchorr remains an independant star system into The New Jedi Order era. While the system continues to host a New Republic military base and a small starship repair facility, the Yinchorri have not yet applied for membership in the New Republic. From the moment they hatch, Yinchorri join tightly knit, highly supportive communities - first their parents and clutchmates, later the entire village they grow up in, then their professional peers and superiors, and finally a family of their own. When a Yinchorri mates, he or she does so for life, and it is quite common for a widowed individual to die from sorrow within a few days of losing his or her spouse. While the Yinchorri have taken to space travel, few have settled off their homeworld. Whose who have, however, have brought their entire extended family with them, essentially transplanting entire vilages at a time. Yinchorri are resolute, pragmatic, and possessive. They beleive that if they are strong enough to take something and hold onto it, it is, by right, theirs. They turn fierce and obstinate when faced with adversity. The Yinchorri are solidly built reptilian humanoids. Adults stand between 2.4 and 2.7 meters tall, with no significant differences in build between males and females. Their bodies are covered in tough skin that is either brown or dark green and provides them protection from the harsh environment of their homeworld. Yinchorri speak their own language, and many learn to speak Basic as well. Yinchorri have taken to the stars with verve, earning their keep as mercenaries, bodyguards, smugglers, privateers, and pirates. Yinchorri adventurers tend to be fringers, soldiers, or scoundrels. Force-using Yinchorri are extremely rare, and no Yinchorri has yet pursued the traditions of the Jedi. Yrashu This Force-sensitive race of green primates is native to the planet Baskarn. The Yrashu live in harmony with their environment, and create ceremonial maces from the roots of the Hmumfmumf tree. They eat the Mmhmm butterflies as a source of food. Those Yrashu which were tainted by the Dark Side of the Force were known collectively as The Low. They were tolerated by society, but looked down upon as delinquents and beings of low character. Most Yrashu speak in a strange language dominated by combinations of "schwa" and "mm" sounds. Ysalamiri (Click For Picture) Ysalamiri are unique creatures. Native to the planet Myrkr, and found nowhere else, Ysalamiri do not have a particularly unusual appearance. They are sessile creatures, somewhat resembling furry snakes with legs. They grow up to half a meter long and have no natural defenses - lacking fangs, resiliant hides, or even much mobility. Since their claws have evolved to grow directly into the metal-rich trees that are the Ysalamiri's natural habitat (which makes it difficult to remove on from its perch), they are not very useful in combat. Ysalamiri spend almost their entire lives hanging from these trees and soon die if removed from them. What makes Ysalamiri so unique is their ability to "push back" the Force in a bubble-shaped area. This is an innate ability. They are incapable of turning it off or focusing it in a particular direction. Each Ysalamiri affects an area centered on itself with a roughly 10-meter radius. If two or more Ysalamiri are within each other's areas, their areas merge, gaining 1 meter radius for each Ysalamiri after the first. A colony of forty or fifty Ysalamiri can push back the Force in an area as large as 100 meters in diameter. It is theorized that the Ysalamiri developed this strange power as a survival mechanism. The primary predators of Myrkr, Vornskrs, depend on Force powers to help them hunt and fight. The Ysalamiri's ability to push back the Force makes it difficult for Vornskrs to find them. Grand Admiral Thrawn used Ysalamiri as portable defenses against Force-users. To do this, he had Imperial engineers build pipe frames to carry them. The contraption was small enough to be worn on an Imperial officer's back, allowing him to move with the Ysalamiri and its defensive anti-Force zones. Constructing a frame that can support an Ysalamiri and remain easily portable is a difficult task. The value of such a frame is 500 credits for purposes of construction time and raw materials required. Thrawn also discovered that strategically placed ysalamiri employed in Spaarti-based cloning chambers eliminated the clone madness caused by the disruption of identical Force patterns inherent in Spaarti clones. By using ysalamiri in his vast cloning facility in Mount Tantiss on Wayland, Thrawn was able to grow adult clones in a fraction of the recommended time. Ysalamiri can see twice as far as normal in poor lighting situations. The Ysalamiri can still distinguish colors, even in dim light. Each Ysalamiri creates a "bubble" centered on itself within which the Force cannot be used. The bubble has a radius of 10 meters, and several Ysalamiri spaced accordingly can create an even larger bubble. Beings cannot access the Force when inside an Ysalamiri's bubble. Force powers activated outside the area do not penetrate it, although they function normall up to that point. Characters with Force abilities become aware of this lack of the Force the instant they attempt to use the Force. The effect is so rapidly apparent that they know there is no point even attempting to use the Force. However, there is no other sign of an Ysalamiri pushing back the Force. A Force-user standing just outside the area would not be aware of it. Prior to Grand Admiral Thrawn's assault on the New Republic, Ysalamiri were unknown throughout the galaxy. Even on Myrkr, the creature's ability to push back the Force was just a rumor until Grand Admiral Thrawn began using Ysalamiri as a defense against Force-users. In any era on or before the Rebellion era, no one should even have an inkling of these creature's powers. In The New Jedi Order era, Ysalamiri are famous among Force-users, and any Jedi would recognize one on sight. Yuuzhan Vong (Click For Picture) This race of beings was native to an extra-galactic galaxy which was devastated by warfare and biotechnology. Evolving first on the planet Yuuzhan'tar, the Yuuzhan Vong worshipped a complex pantheon of gods. Ancient texts discovered by Yuuzhan Vong scholars revealed that, at some point in the distant past, their homeworld was invaded by a highly technological race. More machine that living flesh, these invaders set out to destroy the Yuuzhan Vong. The Yuuzhan Vong, in turn, called upon their gods for help. Although the exact nature of the assistance was clouded by time, the gods provided the Yuuzhan Vong with information on how to use living resources into weapons. After defeating the technological beings who had invaded their world, the Yuuzhan Vong believed themselves to be the chosen masters of their galaxy, a right bestowed upon them by their gods. This new-found pride, along with the skills of war, drove the Yuuzhan Vong away from their gods, and was believed to have resulted in their disconnection with the Force. When individual clans finally conquered all worlds in their galaxy, they began warring amongst themselves. In a millennia-long battle known as the Cremlevian War, Yuuzhan Vong tribes fought to exterminate each other, laying waste to most of their habitable planets. With the end of the Cremlevian War and the unification of the clans, the Yuuzhan Vong found themselves living in a galaxy that contained dead and lifeless worlds. Taking to the stars, they set out to cross the intergalactic void to find a new home, a journey which would take thousands of years and end with the discovery of the New Republic. Roughly humanoid in shape, they often mutilated their bodies with scars and tattoos in order to prove their worth to their gods. Being from another galaxy, the Yuuzhan Vong cellular structure contained no midi-chlorians, thereby rendering them untouchable to the Force. The fleshy faces of the Yuuzhan Vong are distinguished by several key features, in addition to the scars and tattoos that define their social standing: bluish sacks beneath their eyes, sloping foreheads, and lipless mouths. They were masters of organic technology, using all sorts of lesser creatures to perform highly advanced tasks. However, they frowned upon biological diversity, and took severe steps to wipe out or subjugate the other species encountered in their home galaxy. The Yuuzhan Vong society was broken down into three primary castes - warriors, shapers, and intendants - and the minor castes of workers and priests. Much of the Yuuzhan Vong society was centered on the worship of several gods and goddesses, and the belief in those deities forces each member of society to understand his or her place in the universe. Each ritual scarring and tattooing added to the social stature of an individual, and the pattern of disfigurement provided information about the individual's class. It was later discovered that the Yuuzhan Vong had visited the known galaxy some fifty years before their attacks on Belkadan and Dubrillion, when Anki Pace found the remains of a warrior on Bimmiel. After destroying almost every habitable world in their own galaxy, the Yuuzhan Vong created a fleet of worldships and set out to locate another galaxy which they could conquer and inhabit. Somehow, they had penetrated the hyperspacial disturbance which isolated the known galaxy and traveled across the intergalactic gulf. This journey took "incalculable millennia", and was predicated on the death of the original Yuuzhan Vong homeworld, Yuuzhan'tar. Vast numbers of genetic and cellular samples were taken from Yuuzhan'tar, in order for the Yuuzhan Vong to survive the trip. Chief among these samples were the cells of the World Brain that lived at the heart of the planet. The journey necessitated the use of living ships to assist in surviving the journey, which ended when this galaxy was discovered. The initial foray to Bimmiel served as advance intelligence, and gave the Yuuzhan Vong some idea of what life forms existed in the galaxy, as well as their military strength. After establishing a base on Belkadan, the Vong began capturing pirates and enslaving them as laborers on Belkadan. They used gricha larva to form huge, shell-like dwellings wherever they traveled, creating living chambers inside the spiralled nacreous material of the shell. After the Battle of Ithor, it was learned that the Yuuzhan Vong had been experimenting with the various alien species they had displaced while invading the galaxy. Most of the specimens died or were sacrificed, due to their inability to withstand the unusual biological manipulations of the Yuuzhan Vong. Eventually, the Yuuzhan Vong pushed into the Core Worlds and captured Coruscant. The cityworld was quickly demolished, with many structures being destroyed by falling skyhooks and satellites. A World Brain was installed in a yorik coral cavern, and the planet Yuuzhan'tar was rebuilt as the new Yuuzhan Vong homeworld. For many months, a sort of peace existed between the Yuuzhan Vong and the New Republic, as both sides paused to rebuild their forces and defend what each held. This changed at the Battle of Ebaq, where Warmaster Tsavong Lah and his forces were soundly defeated. Tsavong Lah himself was killed in combat by Jaina Solo, and Supreme Overlord Shimrra vowed to destroy anything that got in the way of galactic conquest. However, it was the rediscovery of the planet Zonama Sekot that helped bring the two sides together. Luke Skywalker, Jacen Solo, and the priest Harrar were on Zonama Sekot when it fled the Klasse Ephemora System, and spent many days trying to commune with Sekot. When they did, Harrar revealed that some Yuuzhan Vong believed that they had not fled their home galaxy, but instead had been exiled from it. When Jacen reasoned that this exile might have involved separating the Yuuzhan Vong from the Force, Sekot understood why the Yuuzhan Vong were not visible to the Jedi. They had been stripped of any connection to the Force by their gods - in actuality, the Force itself - a painful act of separation that the Yuuzhan Vong had been trying to reconcile for generations. Only the Shaper Onimi was able to ever regain the connection, after grafting yammosk cells to his own neural pathways, thereby restoring "innocent" living tissue to his Yuuzhan Vong cells. The war between the Yuuzhan Vong and the Galactic Alliance came to an end at Coruscant, after Zonama Sekot appeared and both Shimrra and Onimi were killed in battle. The cost of the war was estimated to have been some 365 trillion beings, but in the end the Yuuzhan Vong were allowed to surrender and find their place within the galaxy. Many chose to commit suicide rather than surrender, and many others simply fled into the galaxy's farthest reaches. However, the Galactic Alliance and the Jedi Knights agreed that Zonama Sekot was the true home of the Yuuzhan Vong, especially in light of the revelations made by Sekot itself. Although a handful of Yuuzhan Vong remained opposed to any sort of surrender, those who returned to Coruscant were transported to Zonama Sekot. The planet, which was actually the offspring of Yuuzhan'tar, took the Yuuzhan Vong and fled into hyperspace, to find a new home somewhere in the Unknown Regions. |
